SHYLER – “Disguise”

Soft guitar strumming melts into SHYLER’s expert storytelling in latest release “Disguise”. The song begins and ends with the same verse – bringing the listener around in a circle as a true written story would: “my memories have died in the darkest place I’ll hide. There’s a whisper in my ear saying everything’s alright.” Perhaps the largest testament to SHYLER’s lyrical ability in this song is that it effortlessly combined stunning verses with the instrumental writing “patiently waiting till I’m facing Satan, I wanted to ask him the cause of the aching. I’ll never get through it, the pain’s deeply rooted. The moment I met you, I knew I was ruined.” The song is prologue, rising action, climax, and epilogue – taking time to deliberately hold space for different pieces of the story. In the middle of the song, the pace slows and SHYLER hypnotically sings “stay down, cus I’m freefalling straight to hell.” SHYLER’s sound is reminiscent of KillStation – but SHYLER is an individual who has not only joined the ranks of the incredibly talented emo revival occurring in the underground, but has begun individualizing their sound within it. SHYLER is one to look out for.

Autmn Rains – “Louisville”

Off Autmn Rains’ RUN2U Ep, “Louisville” is the type of love song that has your heart in your gut. Autmn Rains professes her emotions about somebody, unafraid of being blunt “all you had to do was keep me honest, never bring me down, never give me problems.” The track is stirring because its lyrics detail a situation many have been through – being there for somebody and not feeling sure if its reciprocated “you dont’ get it, you still don’t get it… how many times do I gotta tell you, that I will never leave?” She sings about the stress, the wonder, the overwhelming love for somebody, and the inability to stop questioning it. It is evident that Autmn Rains is a skilled writer, bringing her personal narratives to life through words all can relate to. Autmn Rains’ vocals integrate the smooth beat, her words carried by the reverbed guitar strings. “I been all alone for a minute, I’ve been on your side for a minute.”

Alwyszay – “Flip Phone”

Alwyszay’s “Flip Phone” begins with a haunting vocal that calibrates itself into the first words sung, “know you wanna dip”. It is an RnB song best listened to with your eyes closed, letting its arrangement play into a movie in your head. The song is pleasantly layered – with attention paid to every syllable sung. Alwyszay sings in the chorus “hit me on my flip, told me bring a zip, then you gonna strip, hit me on my flip.” The song is able to blend between situation corridors, as it molds easy to different moods. In love and dancing with the window open. Driving home after the party spent talking with somebody new all night. The beat is a lovely, soothing ambient with drums breaking slightly at certain points, almost like the sound of a clothing zipper. Alwyszay masters RnB in his song “Flip Phone”, bringing back the much missed RnB love song era of the 2000s.

☾✧𝖒𝖊𝖎𝖘𝖓𝖙𝖒𝖊✦☽ – “Wt100”

Meisntme’s latest single “Wt100” is a glittery pop track. Produced by Evmoth, the music is in the style of hyperpop icons Charli XCX and Kim Petras. The song begins by illustrating a feeling of happiness and infinity. Those you capture in the nighttime on nights full of music with friends. “Watch our feelings multiply, make him deny, I’m feeling so high when you’re by side.”

The song becomes somber in a moment as meisntme sings “we’re walking out, we’re walking out, we’re walking out the bars, talking now, we’re talking now, talking now for hours” in that dizzy feeling you encounter on those both special and confusing nights. The music picks back up, snapping out of those feelings of doubt. You are taken back to the energy of those nights with the person you like – hoping the feeling lasts forever.

killfiji – “temperance”

I feel as though I am staring down a wishing well in an enchanted forest. The wind is cold and I can hear the haunting voice of somebody drifting through the trees. I feel as though I am driving down a long dark road in a car, in those moments where you wish you could just drive to anywhere your gut led you to. Killfiji creates a landscape of longing unlike any other. There is something about “temperance” that holds on to you profoundly. Something you cannot quite describe.

“I can say that I forget and I never gave a shit, that I was quick to just forgive but I’d be lying to myself. And I’m a liar as you know.” These are the words with which killfiji lures you into the song, words that stir your being. It is clear killfiji is not an artist who set out to create a perfect, playbook song. This song is honest, coming from a place of introspection. “Temperance”’s many crevices lead you into other fantasies. In those illusions, you find yourself relating to the distance that can come between people and the mistakes that can be made.

The song stays in your head like a sticky honey, difficult to pull apart. You are a part of the world killfiji has created, understanding what is meant by the words “I’ve never dealt with so happy a sadness, so beautifully tragic, it must be the magic”. And you think again and again, “it must be the magic”.

Goth Virgin – “Shallows” (prod. 5head)

“Pouring down the drain, I lost my mind, can’t find it.”

Goth Virgin’s latest release is a lovesick emo ballad. The guitars in the beat have become identifiable to a genre that has overtaken music, based on emo and punk inspiration. Goth Virgin has commanded this sound and continues improving upon it as seen in “Shallows”

“Its all said and done, I’m not the special one” is one of the most notable lyrics of the song, encompassing the feeling of doubting someone’s love for you and ultimately thinking you are worse for the person. Goth Virgin asks, “I wonder if you’re dreaming of me?” Repeating: “Let me take you right back, to the shallows again.”

Brunette AF – “Phone Sex”(feat. Meisntme)

“There’s this really hot guy in my dms right now and I’m like omg b*tch, you know what this means… phone sex”. Brunette AF’s new song is cybernetic and fun. Fitting perfectly into the current rise of hyper pop and music taking a modern twist on early 2000’s sound.

Brunette AF identifies as a queer artist who is a producer, songwriter, and singer, someone who “loves music”. Brunette AF, who resides in Italy, wants to spread the message globally that “Queer is Okay” through music relatable to the LGBTQ community: emphasizing fun, friendship, love, and freedom. “Phone Sex” has clear inspiration from early Lady Gaga songs, principally the glamour Gaga normalized. It is a fun song with a familiar techno pink beat. Brunette AF takes that Y2K nostalgia sound formulated in American popular culture globally with “Phone Sex”.

azure – “CAM GIRL”

Azure never misses. “CAM GIRL” is testament. Azure captions the song “dissing” and proceeds to pick her words carefully. “B*tch I’m choosy and the money I be rolling, ice on my neck, I love money I love hoeing.” This song is so fun. Every lyric I envision to be screamed out and laughed along with. “Thinking he a keeper he can’t even bust a band girl”. This is THE song you add to your “getting ready” playlist, because it is certain to raise your mood and attitude before a night out or even a night in alone. Many people have encountered the feeling Azure conveys, and this song is a release to that emotion in a way that makes you feel like you’re IT. “He just wanna f*ck on a cam girl”…

2MORROWNIGHT – Summer With You EP

2MORROWNIGHT’s Summer With You EP is true to its name. It carries you through a sonic landscape that places you inside your own memories of a summer with somebody you loved (or maybe thought you did). Summer With You is a adieu to summer 2020 and to fond memories, but it is the introduction to 2MORROWNIGHT’s sound and vision as an artist.

“Appealing” featuring artist Cliff, is the first song on the project. It encapsulates the feeling of driving down the California coast at sunset. Your hand out the window moving faster than the waves. This track literally drives you into the album. It is an introduction to a collection of love confessions, arguments, and nostalgia. The track that follows, “Patient”, is clearly a fan favorite on the project. The lyrics “girl you know I was patient with your body” play in your head again and again. 2MORROWNIGHT says “I’ve been keeping it a 100, got girls on me, but I’m swerving everytime like I’m in the rari, they just wanna be you, but they can’t compete.”

“Drink Smoke” is the sonic high point in the project, strategically placed in the middle. This track is faster, maintaining 2MORROWNIGHT’s thematic guitar melodies as well as his purposeful ambiance, the kind felt when dancing with your friends at a kickback. “Drink smoke, let it all go..” is part of the chorus, calling for peace and good times amidst the chaos of the current world. It paints the feeling through its lyrics of holding onto good summer memories and good friendships and good love.

“Her interlude” feels particularly personal to 2MORROWNIGHT, he takes a slower path here tapping into his RnB talent greater. Talking closely about an intimate relationship with someone he is with. The conclusion to the EP, “In or Nah” finalizes the themes explored in the project. The beat is reminiscent to Drake’s “One Dance”. 2MORROWNIGHT asks “let me know if you’re with it, I aint tryna call it quits”. 2MORROWNIGHT’s voice fades into the background asking “are you waiting all night?”. The project finishes in the feeling of nighttime, in contrast to how it began. You are no longer driving down the coast imagining a good summer. You have arrived at your destination and made memories and mistakes that you look back on. Changing in colors and sound, Summer With You is a special display of 2MORROWNIGHT’s talent and an introduction to the path he is creating in his career.

suckerpunk – “Vertigo” (prod. Glasear)

With latest release “Vertigo” Suckerpunk’s talent as not only an artist, but as a writer is certified. The song is transcended beyond its separate elemental components to a cohesive musical masterpiece. The song begins at a fast tempo with a dreamlike melody; a bass coming in the background bringing it all together. In a self described “dancehall” track produced by Neilaworld’s Glasear, Suckerpunk shines.

Suckerpunk begins singing “My life’s just a game that I’m losing. Falling far far behind.” The lyrics of the song dissimilar from its upbeat tempo in a perfect contrast. The song slows down momentarily but is faster at Suckerpunk’s catchy repetition of “ you’re the only one I ever wanted”. Suckerpunk’s lyrical expertise is evident in this song, capable of provoking in the listener the same feelings Suckerpunk sings of, especially with lyrics such as: “Doing anything just to feel something. Leave me all alone with my assumptions.” At the end, Suckerpunk sings, “Take it or leave it baby. I think I found my other half. Mean it you meant it baby, I found out things I shouldn’t have”.

“Vertigo” is a particularly special song. Every crevice feels intentional, every word meaning something. The mark of an artist is in their ability to take a song beyond its original skeleton and create a spirit for it. With “Vertigo” Suckerpunk converts the song from sound to feeling.
