Sizzy Rocket -“American Rage”

Sizzy Rocket captures the angst of a generation with a riot grrly new song, “American Rage”. It is one out of two songs on her new electrifying single of the same name. “The World Is Burning” is the second track on American Rage, the artist’s illustration of the highs of reckless abandon and the lows that follow.

“American Rage” entrances the listener with a hypnotic beat that transports them into the “hot pink spray [painted]” world of the song. Edgy bass synth with EDM vibes adds an electronic accent, and the guitar riffs sound like they belong in a late-2000’s teen movie (a scene where the characters are doing something really badass). Sizzy Rocket dazzles with her strong and emblematic voice that brings nostalgia of the music that predominated pop punk and EDM in the 2010’s. If punk rock & hip hop had a rebellious teenage daughter, this is her anthem. “American Rage” is perfectly balanced out by its melancholy counterpart, “The World Is Burning”. This song sounds like the aftermath of the fiery first track: beautiful devastation. “The world is burning and I wanna go down with it,” sings Sizzy in a way that makes one want to cry. Sizzy Rocket demonstrates her ability to create vastly different-sounding songs that fit together perfectly on American Rage. It takes an immeasurable amount of talent and skill to create something this unique. And Sizzy Rocket? She’s got it.

Dua Saleh -“angel rock”

Dua Saleh haunts the listener with a reflection of hope in “angel rock”. The critically acclaimed Sudanese-American artist creates a fascinating soundscape in their last single of 2020 with a Blood Orangey guitar, ethereal vocals, and a chillingly beautiful viola. The viola has a richer and lower tone as opposed to its violin cousin, which gives this song a dense, deep darkness.

It feels as though some new words need to be invented to more fully describe the vibe of “angel rock”— for now, it can only be described in feelings. In Saleh’s own words, “People crumble into themselves in moments of despair & hope is the only way through.” We hear these thoughts spoken to us from the cryptically allusive vocals and we hear its soul composing every note of the profoundly beautiful viola solo at the end.

“angel rock” is sublime, indescribable, reflective. it is new and ancient, and a reminder of humankind’s deus ex machina: hope.

Ana Mancebo – “La Española”

“I’ve been in the stu, tu en el sillon, I’m sorry I can’t put you on my song, my money long yeah, but you wouldn’t know.” Ana Mancebo’s track “La Espanola” is a fiery blend of rap and latin urbano. With her command of these distinct styles and ability to flow between Spanish and English, Mancebo delivers a song like you’ve never heard before.

Originally from Madrid, Mancebo is now based in Miami and the influence of the city is evident in her sound. The song is about being an independent woman in her bag. Ana sings powerfully, “soy dama sin caballero”. In the last quarter of the song, the drums kick up and you are submerged into a full latin urbano fire as she sings the song’s chorus one last time – again with the sentiment of potency and fearlessness that Mancebo has mastered. “La Española” is a small example of what Ana Mancebo is capable of producing – and she is on her way to taking on multiple genres in which women are historically underrepresented – and won’t take anything short of massive success.

Faerybabyy – “Milk Time”

Earlier this week, Faerybabyy (AKA Payton Morse ) made her musical debut with the refreshingly upbeat “Milk Time”. It hooks you in with a bright and fun melody but the smooth cheerful vocals will have you listening to it on repeat for quite some time. It has a colorful, indie pop sound, but there’s a bit of twangy country quality that makes it really stand out. Its fun and nostalgic feel is guaranteed to boost your mood. If you’re looking for the soundtrack to a spring day this is it.

The track is a lot like Payton herself, bubbly and infectious. Originally it wasn’t the easiest for her to share, she’s actually had the song for two years. She states she originally felt trepidation about releasing the track but now felt like the right time saying “This is my coming out of my cave, I guess, and saying a nice heck off to being controlled by insecurity”. She also says that this is only the first of many more songs to come. We’re looking forward to hearing more from Faerybabyy! “Milk Time” is currently available on all platforms.

Chloe Lilac – “MISS YOU” feat. Kota the Friend

“MISS YOU” by Chloe Lilac ft. Kota the Friend belongs on the radio. It is one of seven fantastic songs on Lilac’s new album titled “DOUCHEBAG”, released in late 2020.

The song is very well-written. This alternative bop’s vocals & melodies blend elements of pop and r&b, which is becoming an increasingly popular sound to achieve. It adds another genre, with a flowy rap segment by Kota the Friend. This rap segment in the bridge of the song adds to its radio-friendly and on-trend sound. The collaboration between these two artists was very well-executed, nicely blending unexpected genres in the middle of this alternative album like a music smoothie. The amounts of each genre vary in each song on the RCA Records album, making for a cohesive album with many diverse sounds that all work together, like so many delicious pieces of fruit in a creative concoction. It’s a really good album to listen to in one sitting because of how all the songs work together, and its relatively short length (21 minutes) makes it easy to do so.

I’ve seen “genre-bending” many times in the world of underground and mainstream music, but the genre-blending on Chloe Lilac’s new album “DOUCHEBAG” is what really excites me.

Ta-Ra – “Real 1”

The intelligent and infinite being Ta-Ra, a France-based hip hop and R&B artist, pours out her love and energy in her new single, “Real 1.” Her unique voice uplifts the harp strings and trite beats as she professes her real and eternal love.

“I’m the real one, I’m the last one / I’m the rare one, boy, you better tell ’em,” she sings as we collectively bop to the rhythm. The formulaic song is catchy, and everyone can relate to a love song like this. Ta-Ra’s music puts a new twist on the R&B genre, fusing it with unique instrumentation layered onto rap beats.

Her forte is R&B and soul, and she definitely shines in this new single. In the chorus she sings, “tell ’em who ain’t never fail, fail, oh my lover / I care, I care, I care, I carе for you.” The repetitive lyricism hammers in her emotions of that one-in-a-million love and is sure to get the new track stuck in your head on repeat. Ta-Ra makes bops for you and your boo.

Nymphnoise – “Give It A Bone”

If you’ve been looking for new music, look no further than Nymphnoise’s fresh demo “Give It A Bone”, right here on Velvet Noise Music.

Now, I’m talking new new— like 30 monthly listeners on Spotify, 13 likes on Soundcloud new. “Give It A Bone” is reminiscent of early 2000’s pop punk, like Avril Lavigne with twists of Evanescence and a pinch of Paramore, and even though this is the only song on Nymphnoise’s platforms, there is an unmistakably personal sound to this song as well. The dark melody is at once catchy and fleeting, its ephemerality demonstrated in the abruptness of the song’s ending and in the ebb and flow of its intensity throughout the song. The lyrics and vocals add to this intense effect— they’re pretty and full of rage.

This raw contemporary single by the epically named Nymphnoise, a.k.a. the equally cool-sounding Wiz, is the first taste of the kind of music this artist has given the listeners. If a demo sounds this awesome, I can’t imagine how good a final release will sound!

Strawb3rriwh0r3 ft Vizionlexx – “Sunburns”

The rebirth of alternative cherry red pop punk sweetness is up a stairway of songs like strawb3rriwh0r3’s song “sunburns” featuring vizionlexx. With drums like a trap song, grit like a punk song, and lyrics like a love song – “sunburns” is a song you instantly add to your playlist. In a beautiful voice, the artist sings “I’m a no one, and I told her, she can love me, till the sun burns” ; “What’s the deal is it real? How you feel. How you feel, is it real?”.

Vizionlexx adds that modern punk nostalgia to the song with skater boy vocals and a distortion effect, carrying on the theme of the song strawb3rriwh0r3 introduced and transforming it.

This is the only song on the artist strawb3rriwh0r3’s page and with only 100 followers, the song has hit twelve thousand listens. Fans are catching onto this track quickly, and admiring it’s build from start to finish – rightly so. It is a perfect medley of skater pop punk nostalgia and lovesick longing for your Valentine’s Day.

dalynn – “i hate this place”

Dalynn produces a beautiful ode to growing up in “i hate this place”. The bedroom indie track features a ukulele that complements Dalynn’s voice and makes for an angelic atmosphere – the type of song you needed those nights lying on the floor in highschool thinking about all that was going wrong and how little was going right. “I hate this place, I’ve outgrown these walls, planning my escape, because my world’s too small. And I just can’t wait till I graduate.” This song is delicate and vulnerable, making it relatable to those who share the same fears and excitement about growing up. Dalynn is only seventeen years old and a brilliant writer who can bring to life the feelings kids feel as they grow into adults and wrestle with the inevitable feelings of entrapment, heartbreak, and freedom that come with it.

Dalynn finishes the song with a more positive outlook on the place she grew up and what it has meant for her “I love all my friends and I wrote this for them, cus I miss this place and I love these walls. Cus’ the world’s so big and I feel so small.” Here she really means what she wrote at the beginning of the song, “this isn’t perfect, but at least I’m not alone, it isn’t much but hey at least it feels like home”, accepting that nothing lasts forever but it is okay to want it to – and the things we dislike we sometimes grow to love.

Sycco – “Germs”

If you’re looking for another quarantine bop, Sycco (pronounced “psycho”) has got you covered with “Germs”. She’s not spreading disease, but these beats are pretty sick. Okay, okay, I’ll stop joking— after all, we have a serious artist on our hands.

“Germs” was released by Sycco under the Australian indie record company Future Classic in 2020, and it is the most popular single by Sycco (a.k.a. Madeline Randall) yet. In “Germs”, Sycco captures the emotions of a toxic relationship: “I’ve noticed you behave, it’s strange, jealousy shows/Considering the rave you made ‘bout letting go”. This kind of candid and direct narrative lyricism is prevalent throughout this Aussie artist’s discography. Along with her cool lyrics, lush instrumentals, danceable beats, and a smooth and slightly Australian-accented singing voice define her sound. Were it not for all the germs that have been infecting the world for the past year, I’d love to see Sycco perform live— the sound of her music makes me picture her playing at some cool underground venue. Until then, I’ll be keeping up with her virtually, and avoiding all contagious lifeforms except for this song.
