Pretty Sick’s latest release consisted of “Black Tar” and “Human Condition”. In “Black Tar”, the familiar sound of “Where Is My Mind” by the Pixies is hand-rendered by Pretty Sick. This acoustic, airy version of a gripping classic automatically lets you know that this song is where you are meant to be.
“Covered in a thick black layer of tar, I can’t breathe but I feel so warm.” In a nonchalant yet perfectly intentional way, the singer makes you hold onto their words and their feelings, wondering which way you are being pulled.“Black Tar” is the kind of song that doesn’t tell you how you should like it, it lets you decide that for yourself.
With me, the line “I’ll always be whatever you want” resonates. This song is an ode to the knowing when something is bad for you but not being able to leave it behind, either by someone else’s doing or your own. By the time the song cuts out on the word “strip”, you feel stuck in the moment the track has created and you are left to your own devices. Swimming in tar.
