Sycco – “Germs”

If you’re looking for another quarantine bop, Sycco (pronounced “psycho”) has got you covered with “Germs”. She’s not spreading disease, but these beats are pretty sick. Okay, okay, I’ll stop joking— after all, we have a serious artist on our hands.

“Germs” was released by Sycco under the Australian indie record company Future Classic in 2020, and it is the most popular single by Sycco (a.k.a. Madeline Randall) yet. In “Germs”, Sycco captures the emotions of a toxic relationship: “I’ve noticed you behave, it’s strange, jealousy shows/Considering the rave you made ‘bout letting go”. This kind of candid and direct narrative lyricism is prevalent throughout this Aussie artist’s discography. Along with her cool lyrics, lush instrumentals, danceable beats, and a smooth and slightly Australian-accented singing voice define her sound. Were it not for all the germs that have been infecting the world for the past year, I’d love to see Sycco perform live— the sound of her music makes me picture her playing at some cool underground venue. Until then, I’ll be keeping up with her virtually, and avoiding all contagious lifeforms except for this song.
