In a fever-explosion that appeases all the senses, Belis’ new song with camm and kassgocrazy is stunning. “They heard you got some money now. I told you that I’d never let the money get me down, but it’s the reason they around and I can’t do that shit.” Unlike Belis’ usual trap pop concoctions, she heads into a reminiscent phase of songs like ‘Tomato Soup’ and ‘Sunset’, whilst singing about the tension her present success has created in her circle. This restructuring of a past, present, future, is done with a devastatingly gorgeous backing track. The song feels like driving through a long tunnel at night, the kind of never-ending melancholy and pleasure felt from the stillness of the same walls for far too long.
Belis makes it clear that when chasing after your dream, those who are not one hundred percent for you, are not worth it. “If they’re praying on your downfall, fuck em! If they’re praying on my downfall fuck em! If they’re hoping you gon slip up or that your cash gets mixed up, we gon tell them fuck em now.” Though those caught up on Soundcloud’s exploding underground scene are familiar with Belis, “Downfall” stands out in the unity created by its lyrical conclusions and instrumental fluidity.
